Now through December 31, your gift will be matched,
dollar-for-dollar (up to $50,000).
Nearly three years ago, I began volunteering with the New England Innocence Project and it has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my 40 years as a lawyer.
From my first day at NEIP, it has been evident how high the stakes are for our clients. As just one example, we’re working on the case of a man who was convicted, at age 19, of a murder he did not commit. When the police initially investigated him for the crime, he did not speak English or understand the court system and was interrogated without an interpreter or an advocate. His defense lawyer offered a half-hearted defense, conducted no investigation, and overlooked obvious ways to challenge the prosecution’s case.
As a result of these many systemic failings, our client has spent more than half his life in prison. He did not have the opportunity to see his mother when she was dying. He has not seen his daughter in decades. Oftentimes, his most regular contact with the outside world is with our NEIP team — what he calls his “dream team” — who are working tirelessly to bring him home.
But freedom can’t come soon enough for people who have been wrongfully convicted. And that’s why I am not only contributing my time to this work, but I am contributing financially as a donor as well.
I have come to love and respect this organization and I have relished being a part of a team so committed to finding a path to freedom, no matter what it takes. And that’s why I am reaching out to you today, on Giving Tuesday, to join me in supporting this work.
Will you join me in making a matching (2X) gift to the New England Innocence Project today? Be a part of our “dream team,” and we can fight injustice together.
Many thanks.
Sincerely,
Peter Lieb, Esq.
